Position Statements
Data Centres in the West
MRWA strongly urges the Victorian Government to adopt a comprehensive and proactive approach to data centre development and water management. Read more in our position statement on data centres.
Environmental Flows in the Maribyrnong Catchment
MRWA calls for a dedicated environmental entitlement for the Maribyrnong (targeting 7 GL/year), stronger passing flows and streamflow plans, better regulation of private dams, and upgraded wastewater treatment—responding to the 21–25% decline in surface water (~16.9 GL/year) and threats to local endangered species. Explore the catchment-wide actions to restore river health, water quality, and climate resilience in the full statement.
Recycled Water for the Environment
MRWA and the Water Think Tank have provided formal feedback on Greater Western Water’s proposal to use highly treated recycled water from Sunbury Waste Water Treatment Plant to help address chronic flow deficits in Jacksons Creek.
We support continued investigation if it meets best-practice treatment and governance standards and is delivered alongside broader catchment reforms. Read the full submission and recommendations.
Concern for Groundwater Ecosystems
MRWA urges the following action on groundwater:
- Set Science-based limits on groundwater use
- Metre all bores with no exceptions
- Protect Deep Creek and other groundwater dependent systems
