Water Literacy for the Maribyrnong Catchment
The Maribyrnong River and Waterways Association is committed to raising water literacy across our communities. As the driest inhabited continent on Earth, Australia should lead the world in understanding water systems and the challenges they face. Yet, studies reveal that only 40% of Australians recognize that our freshwater reserves are finite—a sobering statistic given the pressures of population growth and climate change.
Victoria’s water supply relies on large catchment dams that divert significant volumes from rivers and creeks, leaving many waterways, including the Maribyrnong River, struggling to sustain the ecosystems and communities that depend on them. Despite discussions over decades, the Maribyrnong still lacks an environmental water entitlement, illustrating the urgency for informed decision-making at all levels.
Raising water literacy is key to fostering community support for sustainable water policies, such as investing in alternative supplies like desalination and purified recycled water. These solutions, while costly, can reduce our dependence on overburdened rivers and creeks. Without greater awareness and action, Victoria’s waterways will continue to decline, and the costs—both financial and ecological—will only escalate.
Freshwater is a privilege, not an infinite resource. It’s time to invest in the knowledge and tools our communities need to safeguard the future of our rivers, creeks, and the water we rely on every day. Our Water Think Tank program is one such one way to join the discussion.
