Litter

In partnership with the Yarra Riverkeeper Association, we have strongly advocated reducing litter in the Yarra and Maribyrnong catchments. We have conducted various on-ground projects to reduce litter and increase awareness of the importance of keeping rivers clean. The Yarra and Maribyrnong Blitz was an initiative aimed at reducing litter and improving water quality in the Yarra River and its tributaries through the use of a boat-mounted vacuum system that collected thousands of kilograms of waste from our rivers. We have also been involved in several on-river community litter clean-up events and worked with local businesses to reduce single-use plastic waste and promote sustainable practices. Through these initiatives and collaborations, the Maribyrnong River and Waterways Association has advocated for cleaner and healthier waterways.

The below reports illustrate the volume, distribution and composition of litter in both the Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers.
